by Shireen Damghani

“Ouch! It hurts!”

Waking up in the morning during these snow filled winter days is challenging. The body wants to stay in bed and if it could, stay there the whole day-ideally. The air around us is cold and dry, and as we bundle ourselves up to step outside, we are pummeled with cold gusts of wind, ever present snow that is mounting daily, slush, and black ice. These are dangerous times!

We rush back inside to get warm again after our commutes or walks, and the dry heat warms us up instantly and as a result, over time, we discover cracks and crevices on our skin that were not there a couple of months ago, the bygone summer season. These are dangerous times! The combination of indoor dry heat, outdoor temperatures of 20 degrees or below, the daily grind, oh and the shoveling is a recipe for disaster on the epidermal skin level!

How are we to cope, or catch up with the “skin-quake” that is happening?

According to Ayurveda, the holistic health system that originated in India, we are in the “VATA” season. Vata in laymen terms describes this time of year when it is cold, windy, and dry; when everything dries up, freezes, shrinks, and is brittle. This also happens to our bodies, since we are a product of our environment.

So, if you just like me and everybody, you are probably experiencing dry, cracked skin, dry hair, eyes, and nostrils. Welcome to VATA season!

Ayurveda and other Holistic remedies are available to counter these symptoms. It is useful to know and practice some of the principals that I am about to share with you. These are rough times!

Here is a list of common remedies that you may already know, but may have forgotten. Also, there are some other remedies that you can add to your repertoire of Winter self care: All simple and easy, so no excuses!

1. HYDRATE – HYDRATE –HYDRATEa. Drink pure H2O twice as much as you would or want to. Especially if you drink caffeine in the mornings.

b. For every cup of coffee or Black tea, drink 2 8 oz. cups of warm or room temperature H2O.

c. You should be getting at least 8-10 8oz cups of water per day.

2. After you shower, LIGHTLY pat your skin with a towel (do not rub yourself dry!). Splash some Almond Oil/Jojoba Oil or use your favorite body lotion on your damp skin. Make sure you use gentle and loving circular movements around your joints as they are prone to get dry and crack faster. Wrap yourself up in terry cloth towel or terry cloth robe, if you have either one. Make your breakfast or tea before you get dressed the skin has time to seal in the moisture from the oil.

3. OR, while you are in the shower, use Trader Joe’s amazing Sea Salt & lavender oil scrub to massage and gently scrub skin. DO NOT USE SOAP on your skin. You may feel oily, but your skin will love you for it. Just gently pat dry your body and you’ll be feeling moisturized all day-trust me. Your tub may get slippery, so be careful.

4. DO NOT USE SOAP-EVER. Or if you like Soap, use a soap that has an Olive oil or Shea Butter Base.

5. Before Bed, massage your face and Body (or just dry parts) with either Almond Oil, Coconut Oil, or Sesame Oil. While you’re at it, give yourself a scalp massage with your oily hands. The oil will get into your dry scalp and will help the hair follicle from getting dry. If you want to be extreme, like me, you can generously oil all of your hair and sleep with it overnight. You’ll wake up feeling and looking brighter than you ever did. You can wash your hair with your favorite non-sulfate shampoo. Your hair will be shiny, soft, and full of lovely moisture. Do this at least once or twice a week.

a. Always make sure your hands are moisturized before bed, as they tend to have many areas that may get dry and cracked. ie: the knuckles, cuticles around nails, and even the nails.

6. ADD more oils (non-hydrogenated) into your daily diet. ie: toasted sesame seed oil (sprinkled on greens), extra olive oil on your salads, and my all time favorite ghee. Ghee is Lactose free Butter that you can spread on toast, and use to fry eggs and melt onto rice. Yummy! Your insides will feel lubricated and your digestion will improve too.

a. Don’t worry, you won’t get fat. All of the extra calories you burn by keeping warm, shoveling, and trying not to fall while walking in the snow will do the trick. The oils that you intake will help keep your joints and skin lubricated.

7. Always cover your skin as much as possible when going out into bitter cold days. Where a scarf to protect you from the cold air and wear a hat.

8. USE a humidifier before bed and keep it running all day, if possible. Your plants will be happy too.

9. Plants in your house will give you extra oxygen as well, especially since all the windows are closed during this time.

I sincerely hope this was helpful. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will be happy to answer them.

Mysore Class at Majestic Yoga Studio

For the next four weeks, beginning on February 3rd, Dan Boyne will be leading a Mysore style Ashtanga yoga class every Tuesday and Thursday morning, 7-8:15 am.* For those unfamiliar with Mysore classes, students work on a set series of asanas and move along at their own pace, assisted by the instructor. No experience is necessary, but a commitment to show up for all of the classes is highly recommended for those who wish to progress. The cost for the 8 classes is $120.00. (please note: the 2 week new student unlimited pass cannot be used in this class). Drop-ins are $17.

The value of learning the Ashtanga series is multifold. First, the student will learn a traditional series that allows for the cultivation of self-practice; second, over time, the set series allows the student to focus his/her mind on the development of more subtle, internal aspects of yoga.

Dan’s approach is to have students cultivate an awareness of breath, movement, and internal focus so that the series resembles a moving meditation.

*students may stay longer if time allows.

Dan Boyne has studied and practiced mind/body disciplines for over twenty years, beginning with several years of martial arts training including Tai Chi and Chi Gung. He has studied yoga for a decade, attracted primarily to the Ashtanga tradition and the following teachers: Richard Freeman, Manu Jois, Baron Baptise, and Mimi Loureiro. He has also studied with Arthur Kilmurray, Barbara Benagh, Paulie Zink, and Ana Forrest. Dan teaches an eclectic “vinyasa” style practice, where creativity and fun are encouraged along with a sense of proper alignment. He is also a level II Reiki Practitioner

This weekend Majestic Yoga Studio had a booth at the Head of the Charles Regatta. There were over 9,000 entries. This was the first year that the Head of the Charles had a handicap race. Rowers were of all ages and were in from all over the world. All of Majestic’s teachers gathered to bring yoga to the rowers, their families, and spectators. We taught short classes to the rowers before and after races, bringing them through Sun Salutations and opening up their shoulders and backs. Each teacher taught a their methodology of yoga: Hatha, Anusara, and Flow(Vinyasa). They were curious and quick learners!! Many of the teens practice some Hatha Yoga in their clubs.

One of the many hi-lights of this weekend was Sargent Stewart with the State Police. Each day proudly walked onto the mat and did a few poses with us. He practices Hatha yoga at home. He stood tall and strong in his uniform and he was able to move through and to integrate beautiful poses with such grace and dignity, let alone proper alignment!!! His enthusiasm was fulfilling and transpiring!!! We were all blessed to experience his essence. Many, many thanks!! Here he is Stewart’s humble Warrior. As you can see, he is standing tall, proud, and full of joy!!

Stewart
